Law Module Taught me Latin

So, these are a few words and phrases we learnt in law. I am going to use the help of google translate and (what i wrote in my notes). So here goes:
  • quantum meruit - he deserved (as much as he earned)
  • de minisis - of ministers (not 100% complete)
  • res ipsa loquitor - the thing itself speak (the event speak for itself)
  • ab initio - from the beginning
  • restitutio in integrum - reinstatement (original position before the contract)
  • status quo ante - state before (position he was before hand)
  • non est factum - it was not done (it is not my deed)
  • bona fide - in good faith
  • stare decisis - the decided (to stand by decisions)
  • *obiter dicta - death of the said (not binding but may be persuasive)
  • *obiter dictum - death of the said (a saying by the way)
  • ratio decidendi - reason for the decision
  • nemo dat principle - no one gives the first (what he does not have he cannot give away)
  • prima facie - at first sight
  • novus actus interveniens - new act of intercession (new intervening act)
*obiter - in passing/by the way/incidentally
dicta - the
dictum - said/saying/something said/speech
so, obiter dictum is a saying by the way, don't really get the google meaning of death.

Oh, i also learn that assault is not physical. So as long someone threaten you with a knife, you can say he assault you even though he doesn't attack you with it. Or maybe threaten by mouth/words.
Battery on the other hand is physical. I thought battery is batteries. Apparently it means the act of beating or pounding.
